Diabetes, particularly type 2 diabetes, is a chronic condition that affects millions worldwide. It is characterized by insulin resistance and high blood sugar levels, leading to severe health complications such as heart disease, kidney failure and vision loss. According to the International Diabetes Federation, approximately 537 million adults were living with diabetes in 2021, a number projected to rise to 783 million by 2045. The global burden of diabetes emphasizes the need for effective management strategies, particularly lifestyle modifications like exercise.

The formation of type 2 diabetes is often linked to factors such as obesity, sedentary behavior, and poor dietary habits. Symptoms may include increased thirst, frequent urination, fatigue and blurred vision. In a recent study involving 130 prediabetic adults in Cali, Colombia, researchers found that 57.7% of participants engaged in 150 minutes or more of exercise weekly. This level of physical activity significantly improved their chances of reversing prediabetes, highlighting the critical role that exercise plays in managing blood sugar levels.

Biomarkers like glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) are essential for monitoring glucose control. HbA1c levels below 5.7% are considered healthy. The study revealed that those who maintained HbA1c levels below 6.0% had a greater likelihood of reversing prediabetes. Monitoring insulin resistance through the glucose/triglyceride index can also help identify individuals at risk. To prevent diabetes, healthcare professionals emphasize three key strategies: adopting a low glycemic diet, losing weight and increasing physical activity.

In conclusion, exercise is a vital component in the prevention and management of diabetes. Regular physical activity not only helps control blood sugar levels but also enhances overall health. The findings from the Colombian study reinforce the importance of lifestyle changes, particularly for those at risk of developing diabetes. By promoting exercise and healthy habits, we can significantly reduce the incidence of diabetes and improve the quality of life for millions.
